WHERE STARS COLLIDE

FAN FICTION THEATER – NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET

A while back, Robert Englund did an interview in which he shared his own concept for a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

“If I was in control of my own Nightmare on Elm Street movie, I have an idea I would have liked to see. I thought it would be great if the children of previous victims, or just kids who grew up hearing stories about Freddy Krueger, were each haunted by their own version of Freddy Krueger. […] It would be neat to see very different interpretations of Freddy Krueger based on the child’s vision of who or what Freddy was to them. After all, each person’s subconscious would picture him in a totally different way.”

Taking inspiration from the 2009 Friday the 13th film, my concept, Nightmares on Elm Street, is set in the modern day, and accepts that the events of the original film occurred decades earlier. Now, a new generation will suffer a new type of nightmare.

Because every town has an Elm Street…

NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET
an outline

Thirty years ago, the sleepy town of Springwood, Ohio was ground-zero for a series of brutal child murders. Tonight, the legend of Fred Krueger goes viral.

LITTLE MONSTERS

Springwood Middle School, dark, empty, and surreal. A terrified girl, JESSIE, swims against a tide of sleepy-eyed, inattentive students and staff flooding the hallway. She ducks into the girls restroom and hides. A group of cruel MEAN GIRLS, lead by LISA, stalk, find, and torment her.

Later. Elsewhere. The ADULTS in Jessie’s life ignore her suffering, her pain. At times, they seem oblivious to it all. As if sleepwalking through their day. Her CLASSMATES are no different, lost in their own worlds and daydreams. Some even blame her.

Alone and scared, a disconnected Jessie self-harms and attempts suicide. As she slips into death, her mind seizes on some awful THING she finds there. It speaks to her. Shows her another way. And then, she wakes.

Lisa and the girls gather in a restroom. The lights flicker. Blades scrape against pipes and the walls of a nearby stall. The girls panic. The door’s locked. Jessie strikes. Lisa screams.

Outside. A crowd gathers. Faculty attempt to get inside the restroom. The door opens. They scream and vomit and cower at what they see. Jessie, dripping in blood and gore, holds a box cutter in her hand. Lisa and the other girls lie dead at her feet. A word, “FREDDY,” is carved into their flesh.

NEW NIGHTMARE

We meet NEIL GORDON, failed-writer and blogger on bad terms with his ex-wife, HEATHER. Neil and Heather argue about Neil’s research into the recent string of teen murders and suicide and how his work affects their son, DYLAN.

That night, Neil returns to his work and receives a mysterious email with a link to a small blog detailing a strange story of similar deaths in a small town in Ohio. A video on the site shows a YOUNG MAN violently dying in his sleep, as if by some unseen assailant.

I’M AWAKE NOW

A group of teens inadvertently stream their tragic deaths across the internet. A name is left behind: FRED KRUEGER.

As reports of teen murders and suicides steadily increase and spread, a young woman, TARYN, witness–and narrowly avoids being a victim of–one such incident.

When the police question her, they believe Taryn to be part of some growing online conspiracy.

WESTIN HILLS

Hospital staff struggle to tend to the numerous victims of a recent incident flooding their ER. During a smoke break, a NURSE is killed by her worst nightmare come true.

LITTLE SLICES OF DEATH

Neil receives an unsettling call from Dylan. The boy cries, scared that his mother will hurt him. When Neil rushes to his son’s aid, angrily knocking at Heather’s, demanding she let him in to check on Dyland. And then, the police arrive.

Elsewhere. A series of teens die in various ways, each plagued by personal nightmares turned reality and fatal. Including HEATHER and DYLAN.

Struggling with his family’s apparent murder-suicide, Neil drinks himself stupid and slips into a strange world of his worst fears. A man, a strange beast unlike any we’ve seen before, hunts Neil, kills Neil him in his dreams. But in the waking world, Neil appears to have taken his own life.

DREAM MASTER

A college dorm. An unwell, reclusive co-ed, KRISTEN, struggles with the outside world after recent trauma. She’s haunted by nightmares, obsessed with the growing number of frightening tales on the internet of people dying horrifically in their sleep. She discusses and shares these everywhere she can, including with other bloggers, like Neil Gordan.

Forced to venture into the outside world, Kristen is soon abducted. In an old boiler room, she’s forced to witness several twisted murders at the hands of an eclectic man calling himself THE DREAM MASTER.

Later. The police arrive at the scene. OFFICER KINCAID discovers Kristen’s remains and more evidence of the “Cult of Freddy”.

NO. JUST ME.

Taryn visits her BOYFRIEND, but he’s nowhere to be found. Strange notes and images line his wall and workspace. She receives a haunting call from her Boyfriend. Nine, ten…

Taryn traces her Boyfriend’s phone to a small town in Ohio, to a derelict house at 1428 ELM STREET. The neighborhood is long dead, given to crime and disarray.

Inside, Taryn finds herself in a strange dream world occupied by the souls of dead children, teens, and Freddy’s many other victims. And as she attempts to flee, the true FREDDY reveals himself.

NEVER SLEEP AGAIN

Night. Later. Officer Kincaid, exhausted and broken, struggles to stay awake on the long drive home. The lights and sounds of late-night traffic are hypnotic…

Kincaid dozes at a stop. A SOUND snaps him out of his daze, and he finds Kristen sleepwalking down the now-empty stretch of road in front of them. He follows her.

They arrive at 1428 ELM STREET. A trickle of sleepwalking SOULS wander down Elm Street, toward the old house, and through the door.  Kincaid rolls to a stop, steps out of his car, and follows Kristen inside.

THE END
